A few months ago, a friend told me “You don’t know me”. I was stunned. This was a person I’ve known more than a year. We’ve had countless conversations about all things under the sun, almost every day since we met. To be told that i didn’t really know a person I’ve spent almost a whole year in conversation was, to say the least, crushing.
He was right.
In recent months I’ve learned the hard way that we never really know the person we’re with, even if we consider them the closest confidant, the best friend of recent years. A person can surprise you, in the capacity that they can hurt you, but also the degree of happiness you didn’t know they held in their hands. Someone you thought you had pegged could be entirely different than what you thought they were. Maybe better than what you had in mind, maybe someone you never thought they could be.
Sometimes you could surprise even yourself. You thought you knew who you are, what you did or didn’t do, what you feel for people around you. Then something entirely unexpected happens, and you find yourself not where you thought you’d be. They say change is inevitable. Sometimes we change when we don’t even realize it, and you find yourself not recognizing the person in the mirror.
I guess all I can say is, never assume you know anyone. Even yourself. Coz all you’ll be is wrong.
